AbstractThe present work shows for the first time the study of seasonal behavior of the mesopause Sodium (Na) and Potassium (K) layers simultaneously observed by a dual beam LIDAR at lower latitude in the Southern Hemisphere. We analyze these two alkali metal layers from November 2016 to April 2018 measured at São José dos Campos (23.1°S, 45.9°W). These metal layers show the following annual mean characteristics: K abundance ranges from 2.5 to 20x107 atoms per cm2 , with the layer peak around 90.7 km and width varying from 6 to 11 km; Na abundance varies from 15 to 120x108 atoms per cm2 , its peak is around 92 km with the layer width varies from 5 to 19 km. The wider Na layer occurs on October which is the most abundant Na density month. The centroid for both metals, K and Na, varies little through the year and the K layer is on average 1.3 km lower. Seasonal variation in the Na density shows semiannual variation with maxima at May and October while an annual variation with maximum around winter can be observed on the K.
